Women’s Club Volleyball-The Final Home Game
The Women’s Club Volleyball team hosted UC Santa Cruz this past weekend. This match was the last home game for the Gaels this season.
The first two sets were a bit of a challenge for Saint Mary’s, as the Banana Slugs used their offensive strategy to keep the Gaels down. The Gaels seemed to have already been at a disadvantage because one of their valuable players was not in attendance. But, regardless, our ladies were determined to fight back.

They were able to stand firm by rearranging the whole playing system dynamics, which ended up being a success. Ayanna Williams ‘25 stepped up on offense although she is normally a setter. This switch didn’t stop her from obtaining impressive blocks and hits throughout the game. Another standout was opposite hitter Riley Rizzo ‘28. Rizzo demonstrated both fantastic energy and passes, even though her position doesn’t usually pass at all.
Due to this last minute rearrangement, the Gaels were able to keep the score almost tied for the first two sets and they achieved a 25-18 victory in the third set! The fourth set was a challenge on both ends, as each team gave it their all. This effort came up short for the Gaels, and UC Santa Cruz was able to dominate. The concluding score of this last set was 23-25.

Although Saint Mary’s took this 1-3 loss, they are far from being discouraged. They excelled in serving and staying consistent in their competitiveness throughout each set, which resulted in a very close game. Moving forward into this weekend, the Gaels are concentrated on dominating the court and leaving no chance for a tie.

This weekend these ladies will be traveling to Phoenix, Arizona. They will be competing in their final big tournament for this year. Be sure to wish them safe travels and the best of luck!
