The Passing of Pope Francis
A message to the Saint Mary's Community
Since his passing earlier this week, many of us here at Saint Mary’s have joined the global Catholic community in mourning the loss of Pope Francis. I have been reflecting the past few days on his accomplishments, the impact he made on so many, and how his life’s work aligned so well with Saint Mary’s and our Lasallian Catholic values.
His Holiness leaves a profound legacy of humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice and peace—values that are deeply rooted in our Lasallian Catholic heritage. His life was a powerful testament to faith in action—a principle at the heart of our mission to educate minds, think critically, and examine our world in light of faith.
In the spirit of Pope Francis, let us recommit ourselves to creating a welcoming, supportive, and caring environment, not just for our students, but for everyone associated with Saint Mary’s. Our core values include respect for all individuals and a celebration of an inclusive community, principles that Pope Francis himself lived by and modeled.
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis demonstrated servant leadership, calling all to care for the marginalized, protect the environment, and build a more inclusive and compassionate world. As part of our commitment to these principles, we must continue working to strengthen the community in which our students reside and support efforts to create spaces and opportunities for all of them to learn and engage with one another in a safe and caring environment. We do this while acknowledging our imperfections, but with a steadfast determination to improve.
As we reflect on his life and service, let us honor the memory of Pope Francis by continuing to live out the Gospel values he championed so fully. The Mission and Ministry Center welcomes everyone to a 30-minute Prayer Service on Tuesday, April 29, at 12:10 p.m. in the Chapel to honor his life and legacy. Let us gather to grieve, affirm, and celebrate the life and leadership of Pope Francis.
May he rest in eternal peace.
In faith and solidarity,
Roger J. Thompson, EdD
