KSOE Faculty Spotlight - Dr. Suzy Thomas
Dr. Suzy Thomas is a professor and School Counseling Program Director, and has been at SMC for 27 years. She has her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, credentialed School Counselor (PPS-SC), and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).
I love working in an interdisciplinary setting! Although I primarily teach in the Counseling Department, I have also taught and developed courses in Teacher Education and chaired dissertations in the Doctorate in Ed Leadership program. I really value the connection with colleagues across different disciplines and our collective efforts to support our students and to engage in advocacy together.
I just helped to establish SMC as an institutional partner in a school counselor residency program through the Alameda County Office of Education, and I am also a principal investigator for a grant-funded partnership with West Contra Costa Unified School District and SJSU. Both of these projects represent opportunities for our graduate students in School Counseling to receive stipends and valuable mentoring and support during their field placement year.
I love to engage in creative activities like painting, mask making, designing stepping stones, and art journaling
