KSOE Faculty Spotlight - Dr. Alfonso Montero

by Kalmanovitz School of Education Staff | April 30, 2025

I'm currently serving as Interim Program Director for the MA in Leadership program and teaching and developing courses within the BALOS, MA in Leadership, and EdD Leadership programs.

I've been at Saint Mary's College since September 2023

I hold an EdD in Educational Leadership from Lewis University and a Master's from New York University in Global Affairs: International Business, Economics and Development. My research explores cutting-edge intersections of systems thinking and posthuman leadership practices, focusing on transformative change in the age of AI, with the goal of reimagining leadership for a more inclusive, interconnected, and ethically grounded future.

I'm passionate about teaching leadership practices suited to navigating a complex, evolving, globalized, and interconnected society. My approach integrates systems thinking and cross-cultural wisdom to cultivate adaptive, mindful, and courageous scholar-practitioners capable of addressing contemporary global challenges.

My work is driven by a commitment to fostering transformative change through leadership that bridges diverse perspectives globally. I'm currently working on book chapters exploring the intersections of AI, adaptive leadership, and systems thinking, advocating for more inclusive, human-centered approaches to technological innovation. I engage with global leaders and scholars through international presentations and the Renaissance Leaders podcast, exploring how we can collectively shape innovative, inclusive, and sustainable futures. Recent engagements have included thought-provoking dialogues with leaders from around the globe, including presentations in South Africa, Morocco and Ukraine, and conversations focused on human-centered approaches to technological advancement.

I've had quite the journey—from living as a Buddhist monk in Buriram, Thailand, and immersing myself among Mayan scholars in Chimaltenango, Guatemala, to hosting a local radio show with support from the UN and riding horseback to work as a Rural Economic Peace Corps volunteer in Guaira, Paraguay.

Favorite quote: Australian Aboriginal Proverb:
“We are all visitors to this time, this place. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love, and then we return home.â€
