This course introduces students to the academic discipline and profession of Kinesiology. It examines the historical events, philosophical positions, sociological theories, and contemporary science that concern the human being in motion. Particular attention is devoted to the cultural place and developmental potential of the corporeal actions known as sport, athletics and exercise. American health behaviors (particularly physical activity and food decisions) and how they relate to major U.S. public health issues are examined. Students will spend the latter half of the course in the Kinesiology Department's Human Performance Laboratory, gaining hands-on proficiency in the measurement of health and fitness parameters during resting and exercising conditions, including but not limited to heart rate, blood pressure, VO2max, lactate threshold, anaerobic power, and body composition. Through the framework of the scientific method, students will have the opportunity to conduct a mini-experiment examining a variable of their choice (such as dehydration, caffeine, or heat exposure, as examples). The course will culminate in an oral presentation that summarizes their learning outcomes in the course.
