JAN 410 (3-CU)
Globalized Mexico
Travel dates: Thursday, Jan. 1 - Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026
Instructor: Álvaro Ramírez, aramirez@stmarys-ca.edu
Course fee: TBD
Prerequisites: Attend at least 1 information session & receive instructor permission
In this course, students will analyze the globalization process that Mexico has experienced during the last 30 years. As they do so, they will travel to famous archeological sites such as Teotihuacan, the colonial cities of Puebla and Oaxaca, as well as the postmodern metropolis of Mexico City where students will visit the world-famous museums of Anthropology, National History, and Frida Kahlo’ Casa Azul. They will also attend a Ballet Folklórico show and a lucha libre match. On some days we will have seminar-type discussions in English from 10:30-12:00. We will focus on Mexican identity issues and the recent cultural transformation of urban areas and traditional Indigenous communities. While in Mexico City, students will attend conversation workshops according to their level of Spanish from 12:00-1:30. These workshops are for fun and do not count toward your course grade. Excursions will take place during afternoons and on weekends. Students will be housed in hotels in Mexico City and Puebla, and during a weekend in the beach town of Puerto Escondido. However, in the city of Oaxaca, students will stay with families so they can experience Mexican home life in Southern Mexico. Four meetings scheduled prior to leaving on the trip are considered part of the course.
