Chamber music concerts have taken place monthly at The Studio since 1991. The intimate nature of the performing space and the studio’s location in a garden and field on the edge of Brightlingsea Creek make for an unusual and attractive setting that is particularly suitable for the enjoyment of music of this nature. We have been especially fortunate in the very high quality of those musicians who have played here and who have subsequently brought other colleagues with them on their return visits. The list of past and current performers on our programme for 2017 – 2018 will give some indication of how lucky we have been.

Initially it was my intention to make my studio available regularly for classical music concerts. Since then however, we have regularly included one jazz concert per season and this has proved very popular. It is not our intention to have more jazz but we do also sometimes have concerts which could be called ‘World Music’. For instance, we have had Brazilian music, Cuban music and more recently a wonderful concert which involved Indian rags. We were lucky enough to have distinguished sitar and percussion players on that occasion. This was also greeted with great enthusiasm and I’m pleased to announce they will be returning this May.

The ‘Friends of Studio Music’ club was formed to allow performances to take place within the constraints of local planning permission. Those persons wishing to try the experience can attend a first concert and be signed in by a member. Thereafter a small membership fee is required. Studio Music receives no subsidies or grants from outside bodies and exists solely on membership fees, ticket prices and small donations from its members. We derive a certain satisfaction from having survived in this manner for the past twenty four years.

Concerts take place in an artist’s studio on two levels that is rearranged each month for the performances. Simple broadsheet programmes are provided free of charge. We have no licence to sell alcohol but members are welcome to bring wine or other drinks to consume during the concerts (we provide wine glasses and corkscrews). The level of concentration by audiences during performances has always been a feature of our concerts, and is one which has always impressed the performers.

Colin Kirby-Green has been artistic director of Studio Music since its conception and has been greatly assisted by Jan Oliver in all matters relating to membership and ticket sales. In addition, much help is given by certain members for the preparation of the performance space and during the concerts.
